A Registered Investment Advisor

Earlier this month, our firm had the privilege of participating in the Go Clean energy conference here in Bend. We were happy to be able to sponsor the event and enjoyed all of the great information provided by the speakers. The topics ranged from the role of alternative energy in the state of Oregon to green building practices, to electric car battery advancements. I was honored to be able to present at one of the breakout sessions as well.

My presentation was titled, “Make an Impact for Change with your Investments”. Here are a few highlights of what I covered:

Growth of Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) continues to accelerate with over $1 of every $4 invested dollars in the US going into SRI. This represents over 12 trillion dollars!

Shareholder Advocacy is on the rise, influencing major corporations to make positive changes in the ESG arena.

The public now has useful tools to discover and evaluate available SRI positions:

  • The US Sustainable Investment Forum provides educational literature and an extensive list of SRI mutual funds which includes Performance numbers as well as Screening and Advocacy information.
    USSIF
  • This Fossil Free Funds site allows an investor to evaluate ETFs and Mutual Funds to determine if Fossil Fuel positions are owned. Analysis specifically addresses holdings in these areas: Coal, the Carbon Underground, and Oil&Gas.
    Fossil Free Funds
  • Morningstar’s public site now provides a sustainability ranking for Mutual Funds and ETFs.

The presence of these resources is just another indication that investing using values-based ESG criteria is here to stay! As I communicated at the conference, talking about Socially Responsible Investing is one of my favorite things to do!
